Liverpool have given their first update on the return of young striker Rhian Brewster, and the positive news should give heart to Reds fans hoping the 18-year-old remains at Anfield this summer.

Recent worrying reports have suggested that Brewster may be on his way out of the club in the coming weeks amid interest from Germany, with The Times reporting that Borussia Monchengladbach are making a big move for the England youth star.

Matters were then made more interesting when the Reds reportedly cancelled their pre-season friendly against the Bundesliga club due to a perceived illegal approach.

Liverpool development coach Neil Critchley has now provided a big update on Brewster’s return from serious injury, and his words should give comfort to those still worried about a possible departure.

As quoted by the club’s official website, Critchley said: “Injuries are part and parcel of football. He is in good spirits. Rhian is always in good spirits! You can’t knock that boy down.

“He knows he’s got a few months to go of rehabilitation. He has got a fighting spirit about him and he will come back better, stronger and fitter.

“He’s got to use this time off the pitch to benefit himself physically, which he will do. He will hopefully come back for pre-season ready to hit the ground running.”

While Critchley has obviously not mentioned the reports linking Brewster with a move away, his comments seem to suggest that the club expect the 18-year-old to report for pre-season as normal.

The claim that Brewster is in good spirits is another positive for Liverpool fans, who would have been worried about the youngster having his head turned by the possibility of first-team football in Germany.

The loss of Brewster would have been a big blow for the Reds, with the club having invested three years into the striker who won the Under-17 World Cup with England last year, securing the Golden Boot in the process.

Reds fans can now rest easy about losing Brewster in the coming weeks, with his return in pre-season looking more than likely to happen as planned.
