Despite the massive improvements made in the Liverpool defence since the world-record purchase of Virgil van Dijk in January, Jurgen Klopp will be well aware that he must bring in another quality operator to play alongside the Dutchman next season.

Dejan Lovren is simply too error prone to go a whole season without costing the Reds a significant number of points, with Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan both yet to convince of their long-term viability either.

The club need someone who can come in and guarantee solidity, forming a partnership with van Dijk that has the potential to last several seasons.

One such player that may be available this summer is former Manchester City flop Jerome Boateng, who has admitted that he may look to leave his beloved Bayern Munich this summer.

As quoted by FourFourTwo, Boateng said: “Foreign countries are always interesting. You do not have many chances. Everyone has to decide for himself whether he wants to gain experience again.

“I’m a different age now than I was at Manchester City and now at the point of thinking about it again. Of course, it’s very difficult to get away from Bayern. That would not be a decision against Bayern, I’ve been feeling very well in Munich for years.”

The 29-year-old has been a stalwart at the back for the Bundesliga giants for years now, making 258 appearances and winning countless trophies.

While Boateng has been plagued by injury this season, he has still been selected in the provisional Germany squad for the World Cup, and would be a brilliant option for Liverpool alongside van Dijk.

According to The Sun, Boateng is rated at £50million by Bayern, and while that outlay is large, it would be for a highly-proven performer who would instantly lift the Reds defence.

Boateng is currently in his peak at 29 years old and his presence would surely transform the club into genuine title contenders next season, with their defensive problems a distant memory.

The Sun report that rivals Manchester City and Manchester United are interested in Boateng, and Liverpool must hijack this interest and swoop for him this summer.
