Rangers are hours away from sealing yet another summer signing after long-standing Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan successfully passed a medical, according to STV.

The Scottish broadcaster claim the defender will become the Glasgow giants’ seventh capture of the window as Steven Gerrard continues his vast overhaul of the playing squad.

Liverpool Echo journalist James Pearce reported on his personal Twitter account that Flanagan, whose contract at Anfield expires at the end of this month following an announcement on 8 June on the club’s official site, will complete a free transfer today and will sign a two-year contract with the option of a further 12 months.

OPINION

This is quite an investment in Flanagan from Rangers, given his history. Not only has the 25-year-old a conviction for assaulting his girlfriend, but he has a history of knee problems that effectively ended his hopes of establishing himself as a Liverpool player. Flanagan’s contract at his boyhood club expires at the end of this month after he was released on 8 June, but he immediately has the chance to link up with two Anfield icons in Steven Gerrard and Gary McAllister as well as plenty of other familiar faces at Ibrox. Reports have stated that Flanagan’s medical was a rigorous one. No surprise there. Rangers wouldn’t have wanted to granted a two-year deal with an option for a further 12 months if there was any hint that the former England player had not overcome his knee problems. With a fair wind, Flanagan could be a fine signing. He is used to the expectation and pressures of playing for a huge club, and should not be daunted by the cauldron.
