Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler pinpointed three issues that Jurgen Klopp’s side need to address in the summer transfer window.

The retired forward shared that his former side needed to add more depth to the squad, have more strength in midfield and fix the problems surrounding the position of goalkeeper.

Fowler hinted that the Reds may have already found a solution to their lack of strength in midfield after the club confirmed via its website, that they had signed Fabinho from AS Monaco.

“They have a great team, but there needs to be more strength in depth – more options when things go wrong, like they did when Ramos did Mo Salah. And he did him, don’t have any doubt about that,” wrote the Reds icon in his column for the Daily Mirror.

“Liverpool’s whole system was undermined by that injury, and I think that is clearly something Klopp must look at. I think he is, judging by the interest in Nabil Fekir of Lyon.

“Fabinho looks a good signing too, because they need a touch more strength in the middle.

“Then there’s the keeper. I felt for Loris Karius, and I don’t want to crucify him. But if you are there in these big games, then you have to be ready to perform. And obviously he didn’t.

“I’m sure it is a position Klopp will look at now, he needs to.”

OPINION

Fowler correctly pinpointed three problems that needed addressing but resolving the squad’s lack of depth is going to take time. The Reds appear to be ensuring that only top-quality players arrive at Anfield in the current window and that requires them spending big on every new recruit that comes through the door. However Klopp can easily appear to fix his side’s lack of numbers by utilising the club’s academy if necessary as the youth-system is currently packed with promising talent that it’s eager to break into first-team now rather than later. While Fowler touches on the goalkeeping problems that have caused the club a headache, he’s relatively polite about Karius. It’s refreshing that the legend doesn’t slam the 24-year-old shot-stopper as many pundits have gone out of their way to kick him while he is down. Aside from that, Fowler raises three good points and hopefully he right about Klopp thinking along the same lines. The only debatable area is whether Fowler believes Fabinho’s signature has added the needed strength the midfield lacked.
