Liverpool defender Joe Gomez’s dedication to put in the work during the off-season has seen him make impressive progress in his road back to fitness, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The newspaper state that the 21-year-old, whose current contract sees him earn £30,000-a-week (Source: Total Sportek), has recently been given the green light to take the next step in his recovery as he can now start working outside at Melwood.

Liverpool Echo report that Gomez, who had ankle surgery in May, is one of five players who has been working at the Reds’ training ground in the summer in a bid to speed up their recovery time.

OPINION

Gomez along with Joel Matip, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Rhian Brewster and Allan Rodrigues de Sousa have all been working hard at Melwood to speed up their respective recoveries where ever they can and that’s good news to hear. However based on the assessment of the other players, it’s Gomez that has handed the Reds a boost this summer. The 21-year-old played a notable part in Jurgen Klopp’s first-team last season as he made 31 appearances across all competitions before his ankle injury prematurely ended his season. While the report doesn’t give a time frame for his return given the fact he is now training outside suggests he could be easily cleared by the start of the season. Although given that it was an ankle injury that he suffered the club should be careful with him. These type of injuries are always hard to quickly recover from as if a player returns too soon, the chances of the problem reoccurring are high.
