Gary Lineker has taken to Twitter to mock Luis Suarez for his performance in Uruguay’s 1-0 World Cup win against Egypt as he compared him to absentee Mohamed Salah.

Uruguay were strong favourites going into the Group A clash but delivered a massively below-par display even though Liverpool sensation Salah was an unused substitute after dislocating his shoulder in the Champions League final.

Match of the Day host Lineker was unimpressed by the performance of Barcelona striker Suarez and joked that his Egyptian counterpart had been even more effective.

OPINION

Central defender Jose Giminez settled the match with a bullet late header as he provided the matchwinning moment that most expected from Uruguay’s feared front pair of Suarez and Edinson Cavani. But the pair lacked the teeth and bite that they usually offer in spades, bar a late rally as the south Americans went for the jugular. Suarez looked especially leggy and off the pace, with his trademark brilliance and zip completely deserting him. Lineker’s dig was brutal but not too far off the truth. Salah is clearly some way off full fitness after breaking down three weeks ago in the Champions League final. One theory is that the Egyptian king is being saved for the weaker opponents Russia and Saudi Arabia, but he would surely have been used – as a substitute at least – if he felt he could trust his shoulder in contact. Egypt now find themselves with an uphill task to get out of the group. And that is no laughing matter for their star player.
