Manchester United fans have taken to Twitter to express their glee after Liverpool’s bid to sign Nabil Fekir from Lyon collapsed on Saturday.

The France international was expected to join Jurgen Klopp’s side before France left for the World Cup, but Lyon revealed on Saturday night have now halted talks and called off the deal.

A Lyon statement read: “Transfer negotiations with Liverpool and Nabil Fekir for the transfer of the captain of OL have not succeeded and Olympique Lyonnais have decided to put an end to this negotiation tonight at 8pm.

“Although Liverpool have been the priority of a possible transfer for Nabil…Olympique Lyonnais is delighted to be able to count on the presence of our captain, who is a leading player for the 2018/19 season when the club will play in the Champions League.”

Liverpool fans are crushed at the failure to push through the Fekir deal after he underwent a medical on Friday at France’s training camp in Clairefontaine.

The 24-year-old has been widely hailed as the ideal answer to the Merseysiders’ need for a playmaker to replace Philippe Coutinho, who quit in January to join Barcelona.

The collapsed transfer has been seized upon by Liverpool’s rivals in the Premier League such as Man United.

Fans of the 20-times Premier League winners took to social media en masse to mock the Fekir collapse, with comments including that Real Madrid skipper Sergio Ramos must be to blame.
