Stoke City attacking midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri will join Liverpool after the World Cup, according to a Staffordshire radio station.

Newcastle-Under-Lyme outlet Hitmix 107.5 FM claim on their Twitter account that the Merseysiders have tabled a £12.5million bid that triggers the release clause in Shaqiri’s Stoke contract.

Hitmix report the Switzerland international will sign a long-term contract and complete a medical at Liverpool following the completion of the World Cup next month.

OPINION

Hitmix is a community radio station that covers Staffordshire and usually tweets about news, sport and weather in Stoke and the surrounding area. There is no reason for them to post the huge transfer update about Stoke’s star player unless they have some well-sourced information. Certainly, it has been widely reported that Liverpool are interested in Shaqiri, but some outlets have dismissed the left footer as down the list of targets and none have gone so far as to state the release clause has already been triggered. With the recently-relegated club left with no option but to accept Liverpool’s bid, it appears a medical is the next step once personal terms are agreed. That could be some time away, as Shaqiri is in action for Switzerland at the World Cup, where he will be regarded as one of their main hopes for progression to the knockout rounds. He is a fine player who is proven in the Premier League and, at £12.5million, would be a low-risk signing for the Merseyside giants.
