Liverpool hold zero interest in Besiktas defender Domagoj Vida and will not sign another centre-back this summer, according to the Liverpool Echo

The regional newspaper report that manager Jurgen Klopp has made the major decision to not sign reinforcements in that area despite Joel Matip’s recent injury setback.

The Echo claim that Klopp is unconcerned about a potential shortfall in defensive cover following the injury blow, with the club holding no interest in Croatia international Vida despite heavy speculation.

It is said that the club have been left ‘baffled’ by the constant reports linking them to a move for the 29-year-old.

OPINION

It looks as though Liverpool are unmoved following Matip’s injury blow, and that may come as a concern to many fans. There is a large section of Reds supporters who believe that the club should have made a move for a new centre-back this summer even before Matip’s setback, and this decision will therefore raise a few eyebrows on Merseyside. Defence has long been a huge issue for the Reds, and while they have solved their goalkeeper conundrum, there remain questions over the long-term viability of Dejan Lovren at centre-back. If the Reds really want to launch a title challenge next season then they need a world-class centre-back pairing and Lovren, Ragnar Klavan and Joe Gomez are not on that level. Virgil van Dijk needs a partner who he can trust week in, week out, and there will remain doubts over Liverpool’s title credentials should that not happen this summer.
