OPINION

Harry Maguire might not have won everyone over after England’s first game in the World Cup against Tunisia.

He looked hesitant at times and lacking the experience needed at the top level.

After last night’s thrilling game against Colombia, that England went on to win 4-3 on penalties, booking a place in the quarter-finals against Sweden, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn’t think he was absolutely brilliant.

Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp are super strong going into the new 18/19 season. Naby Keita and Fabinho will both make the midfield stronger, and a new five-year deal for Mo Salah has probably been the best news of all.

But Liverpool still need a centre-back who can stand shoulder to shoulder with Virgil van Dijk – Dejan Lovren, regardless of his occasional heroics, isn’t that man.

Step forward Maguire.

After his heroics in Russia it’s not going to be easy to prise him from Leicester, a club that doesn’t need the money he’d rightly fetch.

He only signed last summer for £12million and would already go for many times that.

The 6ft 4in colossus – who played a blinder in the face of extreme provocation from Colombia – is under contract until 2022 but Liverpool should still pull out all the stops to land him in one of the deals of the summer.

Last night seemed to be a real coming of age for him and he’s ready to make the move that would define his career at the age of 25.

With Maguire and Van Dijk at the back, and Liverpool’s stunning attack and new-look midfield, even Man City would start to get a little worried about the new season.
