Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has announced his desire to stay and fight for his future at Anfield.

The 28-year-old spent the second-half of last season on loan at West Brom, where he made just six Premier League appearances due to injury problems and didn’t score a single goal.

The striker’s Anfield career has been overshadowed by constant injury issues, having sustained 15 separate injuries in his stint with the Merseyside club, missing a total of 99 games in the process.

The England international told the Liverpool official website: “I see myself staying at Liverpool, hopefully being part of the team week in, week out.

“Pre-season is going well, so for me it’s keeping my head down and building on that. I’m excited about the season ahead and it feels great to be back.

“I am feeling great and can’t wait to get the season under way. We have the tour to come where we face some great teams like Manchester United, Manchester City and [Borussia] Dortmund.”

OPINION

Make no mistake about it, Daniel Sturridge is a magnificent player. The 28-year-old really has got everything you need to be a world-class striker, he’s very quick, has got good movement, physically strong, can dribble past people and is a sublime finisher. If you were building the perfect forward in a test tube, Sturridge would not be far off what you would want. However, his constant injury niggles have impacted on his career in an extremely negative way, to the point where he is now a figure of ridicule for many whenever he sustains any new injury. If the former Manchester City striker can get himself fit and stay healthy for a long period of time, he could be a massive help for Jurgen Klopp’s side and would absolutely score an awful lot of goals. But, time and time again he’s proven his vulnerability and there comes a point where you can’t have someone on your payroll who doesn’t contribute to the team. He might want to stay, but Liverpool might not want him to.
