Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is undoubtedly prioritising a bid for the title in the upcoming season, but he needs to get the edge over his fellow rivals to put the club firmly in the mix – and that should begin sooner rather than later.
ESPN have reported that Chelsea and Manchester United – two clubs who could easily challenge for the title – have enquired about swooping for Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara.
Klopp needs to brush aside his rivals in this situation and pounce for the passmaster themselves, who could provide an excellent link-up with current central midfielders Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita.
There is no doubting the Spaniard’s vast amount of experience – he has won the Bundesliga title five times.
Like his Spanish compatriots, Alcantara is an expert in passing the ball effectively and getting involved with the type of attacking play that can cause a lot of damage to opponents.
Henderson is considered a kingpin in the Liverpool midfield, with his ability to control games in the middle of the park warranting him a place in the England squad – but Alcantara possesses the same ability, and would be an excellent addition in order to enhance the midfield even more.
A vast amount of games can be decided in the midfield, and with some of their rivals infamously strong in this area, it is important that Klopp can recruit players with Alcantara’s calibre to give them the edge over these clubs.
With the Bundesliga giants set to sanction the sales of one or two of their players, now could not be a better time for the Reds to make a pounce for the Spanish enforcer, who would be the perfect addition to their midfield.
