Sky Sports pundit Alan Smith does not think Liverpool are capable of bringing the title to Anfield for the first time this season, despite their new signings.

The former Arsenal striker – who won two Golden Boots during his time at the club – thinks that Manchester City have what it takes to retain their Premier League crown, while tipping the Reds to finish below them in second.

Liverpool splashed out a reported £164million on new players this summer, but Smith does not honestly believe that this will be enough to topple City from the summit.

He told Sky Sports:”Riyad Mahrez is a valuable addition and in Pep Guardiola they have a manager who retains his hunger, and as long as he can keep that hunger in his players too, then they will have too much for everyone else.

“With the signings Liverpool have made, Naby Keita and Alisson being the big ones, and the weaknesses they have addressed – with them now appearing to have a quality ‘keeper – it should take them to second.”

OPINION

Smith appears to be accurate in his prediction of Liverpool’s title hopes this season. Although many would have tipped them based on the signings they have made, he obviously thinks Manchester City are too strong for the Reds this season. However, anything can happen in the Premier League – you only have to look at Leicester’s shock win a few seasons ago – so do not be surprised if Liverpool topple City themselves. They most definitely have the quality to win the title, but so do do City – and based on players, you can see they are evenly matched. No other team will come close to them, but some Liverpool fans would argue that this is an unfair assessment of the upcoming season. Liverpool are in the best position they have ever been in to win the title this year, and it would be a shame for them to see it go to City once again.
