beIN SPORTS pundit Andy Gray has aimed a dig at Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge, despite his goal against West Ham United yesterday afternoon.

Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane are all first choice to lead the Reds’ attack, which means the 28-year-old looks set to play a fringe role for the season.

Former Everton forward Gray was quoted on beIN SPORTS as saying: “No-one doubts the ability the young lad’s got. I have doubted his desire to put himself out there on the football pitch time and time again.

“It’s a great start for him but I’m not going to go overboard about Daniel Sturridge because too many times he’s let too many people down.”

The England international came on as a substitute in the second half, wrapping up the win by slotting home the ball with his first touch.

Gray added: “For Liverpool’s sake I hope he is the new Sturridge. I hope that he has learned, and I hope that he does want to play, the latter part of his career, time and time again.”

OPINION

Daniel Sturridge may have fallen down the pecking order at Liverpool last season, but Klopp looks like he may give the forward a chance this time around to prove himself. He is a dangerous striker on his day, and if he is played regularly enough, we may see glimpses of this form again. Gray has been rather harsh in his criticism of Sturridge, and he should at least give him a few more games to show what he can do. He offered fans a taste of what he can do on Sunday, and that should not be brushed aside so quickly. After all, we are only one game in – and that is not enough time to tell whether he is the ‘new Sturridge.’ The 28-year-old has the ability to further his career at Anfield, and hopefully we will see him improve during the course of the season. His goal may have not have come against the toughest team in the league, but it is a good start.
