Liverpool midfielder Fabinho has claimed that he did not move to rivals Manchester United last summer because they “never showed any formal interest” in signing him.

The central enforcer said that a move to Old Trafford was not on the cards after the club never made him an offer to join forces with them, even though they reportedly increased their pursuit of him last summer.

He was quoted by Sky Sports as saying: “[United] never showed any formal interest, they never made me an offer at all. Maybe there was some interest or a conversation but it’s not a case of Monaco not letting me go to Manchester United or denying me the move.

“Nothing ever really materialised.”

The 24-year-old made the move to Liverpool for a fee of £44 million just a year after being linked with a move to the Red Devils.

OPINION

Liverpool must be gleaming that they managed to sign a player linked with a move to their fierce rivals. Jose Mourinho has not had the most successful of transfer windows, and the fact he missed out on Fabinho last year as well must have rubbed salt into their wounds. Even though he was tipped to move to United, the club must be kicking themselves that they never made a bid to acquire his services, especially now that the Reds have landed him instead. Mourinho was mad not to advance any interest in Fabinho last year, and he is sure to be green with envy when he sees him play for Liverpool this season. The Reds will be glad that they have got one up on their rivals by signing the Brazilian, and time will now tell whether he will prove to be the difference between the two sides. What was United’s loss, is now Liverpool’s gain.
