Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic has emerged as a possible transfer target for Championship high flyers Leeds United, according to the Yorkshire Evening Post.

The newspaper reports that Marcelo Bielsa’s side have an interest in both Grujic and Everton midfielder Muhamed Besic, who is also being targeted by Middlesbrough.

If Boro snare the Bosnia and Herzegovina international then the Whites are likely to make a move for Grujic, who impressed in a loan spell with Cardiff City last season.

Neil Warnock attempted to bring the Serbian back to Wales this summer, but his efforts appear to have failed and the 22-year-old may now be set for another Championship loan.

OPINION

Grujic was always going to be a target for second tier teams if his Cardiff return fell through. Now that Warnock’s pursuit of the player has failed, Liverpool must decide what to do with the Serbian. Clearly he is way down the pecking order at Anfield, but if Klopp feels that the potential is there then he should be sent out on loan again rather than sold. Sitting on the bench or in the stands is no good for a 22-year-old; Grujic needs to be playing regular football. Leeds would be a good opportunity for him to do that, and a manager like Bielsa would surely improve the young man’s game. There’s no real reason for Liverpool to resist this move, unless the club want to sell the player permanently this summer. There’s no indication that this is the case though and the feeling is that the club see him as having a long-term future at the club. Leeds could be the perfect place for him to continue his development.
