Liverpool under-23’s manager Neil Critchley has claimed he never felt that star youngster Rhian Brewster would leave the club this summer.

The 18-year-old, who signed a new five-year deal at Liverpool earlier this summer, was linked with a move to German side Borussia Monchengladbach earlier this year, but Critchley always thought the attacker would remain at Anfield.

“I was delighted, I always thought he would sign,” he told ESPN. “I never thought there would be any danger of him leaving.

“I know how much he loves being at Liverpool. I know what the club and the people mean to him. I’m absolutely delighted that he’s decided to stay and sees his future at the football club.”

OPINION

Everyone at Liverpool would have been bitterly disappointed if Brewster ended up leaving the club this summer. The 18-year-old is regarded as one of the most talented players of his age in world football, as shown by him winning the Golden Boot with England at last year’s victorious U-17 World Cup. To allow him to slip out the door would’ve been crazy. Luckily for both player and club, Brewster committed his future to the Reds earlier this summer, ensuring that he will be plying his trade at Anfield for the foreseeable future. He’s currently out with an injury, a setback that is expected to keep him sidelined until Christmas, but once he returns he will likely be in and around Jurgen Klopp’s first team squad. Competition for places up front is fierce at Anfield, but Liverpool clearly see Brewster as the future so his time will come soon enough.
