Liverpool defender is due in Italy today in order to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms with Cagliari, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper reports on their website that Klavan – who is on £55,000-a-week [Spotrac] – is close to making a summer move to the Serie A outfit in a £2million deal, after failing to nail down a first team spot since his arrival in 2016.

The Estonia international has made 50 appearances since moving from Bundesliga side Augsburg two years ago, but slipped further down the queue for the senior team after the arrival of Virgil Van Dijk in January.

OPINION

This proposed move to Cagliari is the best choice for Klavan in his career right now, as he was never going to progress at Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp is keen on the partnership of Van Dijk and Joe Gomez, so the 32-year-old was never going to get a look-in this season. He has a few seasons left in him at least, and it would not have been fair for him to play out that remaining time on the bench at Anfield – he is an experienced centre-back, and deserves to be playing regularly. Moving to Cagliari will give Klavan the confidence that he has the ability to be a regular after being unfairly dismissed in recent seasons, despite the fact he has been an established international since 2003. Liverpool may regret letting him leave particularly if one of the centre-backs sustains an injury – he would have been the perfect cover if a situation like this was to arise.
