Liverpool forward Divock Origi rejected the chance to join Premier League newcomers Wolves this summer, according to the London Evening Standard.

The newspaper claims that the Belgium international was made available for a fee of £27million, but that he turned down a switch to Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

Wolves invested heavily upon their return to the Premier League this summer but it appears it wasn’t enough to convince Origi, who now seems set to stay at Anfield this summer, to sign on.

The 23-year-old looked set to leave Merseyside before the European transfer window closes on Friday, but has now decided to stay and fight for his place in Jurgen Klopp’s team.

OPINION

Origi’s decision comes as something of a surprise. It appears unlikely that he will get much first-team football this season behind the vaunted attacking trio of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane, while Daniel Sturridge’s pre-season performances have pushed him even further down the pecking order. The Belgian is a talented player, but is he talented enough to play regularly for a club of Liverpool’s size? Only time will tell. He would’ve been a key player for Wolves but he seems determined to stay at Anfield. Origi is unfortunate that he’s at the club during the time of the Salah-Firmino-Mane partnership that terrorised Europe last season, but he had an opportunity to secure first team football and he turned it down. He’s made his decision now, though, so all he can do is work hard and try to convince Klopp that he’s worthy of a spot in the team.
