BeIN Sports anchor Richard Keys has aimed a dig at Liverpool after Jurgen Klopp made comments on how he would rather beat Manchester City rather than snatch the title from them this season.

Manchester City have been touted as favourites for the title, but Klopp is instead focusing on defeating the best team in the league, rather than toppling them at the end of the season.

He was quoted by the Mirror as saying: “If a team is better than yours, then you have to work out how to be at their level and how to beat them. I have never wanted to have the best team. I have never wanted to be the best player or the best manager.

“What interests me is to beat the best. The best team today in England is Manchester City. That means that the other teams are not the best. The goal then is to beat City as often as possible.”

Broadcaster Keys reacted to these comments by aiming a dig at Liverpool, dismissing their title chances by stating that “you’ve got to be the best to win.”

OPINION

It can be argued here that the pundit does have a point about Liverpool’s title chances. Klopp is right in saying that in order to be the best, you have to beat the best – in this case, Manchester City. However, surely winning the title by toppling the best team in England would be a solid case of helping Liverpool establish themselves as the best? Klopp has made some rather outlandish comments here, and they will certainly leave fans scratching their heads. As a manager, winning the title should be his main priority rather than caring if the Reds beat City or not. There is obviously a little bit of him that would do what ever it takes to be champions at the end of this campaign, and it looks like Klopp is slightly envious of what City have achieved. Liverpool need to bring in trophies this season – and that should be Klopp’s sole aim.
