A section of Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to express their disappointment at Trent Alexander-Arnold’s performance against Crystal Palace on Monday night.

The Reds ran off as winners in their second clash of the season, defeating the Eagles 2-0 – thanks to goals from James Milner and Sadio Mane – to keep up with Manchester City, who sit at the summit of the Premier League table.

The 19-year-old left fans seething on Twitter for his lacklustre performance after being selected to start at right-back by Jurgen Klopp, with comments including “really disappointing” and “quite mediocre.”

OPINION

Liverpool fans are right to lay into Alexander-Arnold after his performance against Crystal Palace. He established himself as a Klopp favourite last season, but he now looks a shadow of his former self based on this recent display. The player that we saw produce pin point crosses last season seems to have disappeared, and he looks like he has been replaced by a player full of inexperience. However, we are only two games in, so the supporters should not get too carried away with their criticism of the youngster. We know what a talented prospect he is based on how he played last term, and there is no reason why he cannot go out in the next game against Brighton and prove all of his critics wrong. This is what he needs to do in order to silence the section of fans laying into his display – yes, he was not good enough last night, but the Reds still won to keep up with the pace of City. It is easy to both agree and disagree with the Liverpool faithful here, and we will just have to wait to see how he performs against the Seagulls this weekend, if he is selected.
