Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has laughed off the previous speculation linking him with a move away from the club.

The 27-year-old – who is on £90,000 a week [Spotrac] – was previously linked with a move to Turkey earlier in this summer’s transfer window after the Reds had splashed out £90 million on Fabinho and Naby Keita.

However, the Dutchman insists he was not responsible for the rumours linking him with a Liverpool departure.

“I laughed about it,” Wijnaldum told the Guardian, “I also read I asked the club if I could leave. I never had a conversation with the club. People from the outside just see Liverpool are buying players, so players who are already here are going to leave.

“Liverpool will always buy good players, even if they already have good players. That’s normal. I think it has to be normal, because that means you’re a big club. But that was something from the media that I was going to Turkey. Maybe because Phillip Cocu is manager [of Fenerbahce] and I worked with him for two years. I don’t know who put it in the media but it wasn’t me.”

OPINION

Even though Wijnaldum was linked with a move away this summer, the fact he has laughed it off shows how much of it was just gossip. Jurgen Klopp started him in the team to face West Ham yesterday, so the the rumour saying he asked the club if he could leave is largely inaccurate. He is one of Liverpool’s star players and they have no reason to offload him, despite signing Keita and Fabinho. Yes, the midfield may now be overcrowded as a result, but all three players are capable of making a solid impact on the team. He may have felt that his place would be under threat due to the arrival of the duo, but it now looks like he may have nothing to worry about. That being said, Fabinho was on the bench yesterday after feeling ill, so Wijnaldum may have to take his first team chances sparingly.
