Match of the Day pundit Ian Wright has called on Liverpol boss Jurgen Klopp to bring a trophy to Anfield this season, otherwise he will be a “failure.”

Klopp has had a successful transfer window this summer, bringing in the likes of Naby Keita, Fabinho, Allison and Xherdan Shaqiri to bolster his squad this season.

The Reds spent the most out of all the Premier League clubs this summer, and Wright has highlighted the importance of winning a trophy this after raising the fans’ hopes last season by finishing fourth.

The former Arsenal striker told BBC 5 Live Sport: “If I’m a Liverpool fan I’m wanting a lot more than last season. If he doesn’t win anything this season with that team, I think that’s a failure.”

“They’ll be judged on actually winning a trophy, this team that he’s assembled, that’s what they’ll be judged on.”

OPINION

Based on the signings Klopp has made this summer, it would be very surprising not to see Liverpool win at least one trophy this season. He has made significant improvements on the squad, and they are more capable of competing for honours this time around compared to last season. Finishing fourth has only raised the fans’ expectations that they can do more this term, but the proof is in the pudding – they must go out there and win this time. To come away from the 2018/2019 campaign trophyless would be a disaster in Klopp’s eyes, and it would make him question the efforts he put into enhancing the team.  They most definitely have the quality to produce big things this season, and Wright is correct in saying that they will be judged on what they win. With the players he has got, he has put the team in a fantastic position, and it would be a shame not to see them succeed.
