The agent of Simon Mignolet has confirmed that Serie A club Napoli are in negotiations over a last ditch raid for the Liverpool goalkeeper ahead of Friday’s deadline.
The Sun state on their website that Napoli – who will be playing in the Champions League this season after finishing second in Serie A – are close to a deadline swoop for the 6’4″ (source: Transfermarkt) giant, who has now been pushed down to third-choice keeper after the £67 million arrival of Allison from Roma.
Mignolet’s agent Nico Vaesen was quoted by the Sun as saying: “We are in discussions with Napoli, but there is no agreement yet. In the end it is in their interest to find a solution. Liverpool want to keep Simon, but he wants to play in matches – and he should.
“He deserves to play for a big club. Simon is the best option for Napoli in terms of quality, even though there is a financial aspect to it.”
OPINION
Liverpool need to make their minds up if they really want to keep Mignolet, especially after being demoted to third choice stopper by Loris Karius. There is no doubt that the Belgian wants to be playing regualrly, and he knows that is not going to happen at Anfield. He is a great keeper on his day, and Napoli would be lucky to have a player of his quality in their side. They do not have long though – the window in Italy shuts on Friday, so they only have two days to finally wrap up the deal. However, the fact that they are eyeing a deadline deal is promising, as it shows that they are willing to take on Mignolet’s high wages. Fingers crossed for the 30-year-old that the switch does happen, as he deserves to end his nightmare stint at Liverpool and play first team football again for a club who appreciates him.
