Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has revealed the main reason for the Reds’ Champions League final defeat against Real Madrid in May.

Liverpool suffered at the hands of the Spanish giants, losing 3-1 in a match which saw Mohamed Salah go off injured after a controversial challenge from Sergio Ramos followed by two goalkeeping errors from Loris Karius.

Despite the problems in the final, the German boss thought that another key factor was the cause of their defeat to Los Blancos.

Klopp said, as quoted by France Football: “Everyone knows that Mo Salah’s injury has changed things.

“But not only that. We are not going to rewrite the story, but we played the last two months of last season with twelve valid players.

“We had to fight with Chelsea until the last day to finish fourth in the championship and secure our place in the Champions League.”

OPINION

Liverpool will be desperate to push on from their successes of last season by chasing for more silverware over the course of the upcoming season. The Reds have added several new top signings and their strength in depth should be maximised if they are going to repeat their attempts of winning the Champions League this season without any low levels of fatigue creeping in before what could be important matches during the end of their campaign. The squad is more than capable of reaching another final with the signings of Naby Keita and Fabinho, who already have European Cup experience after featuring for RB Leipzig and Monaco respectively. Their previous campaign was long and draining after beginning with Champions League qualifiers in the early months of last season. However, that is not the case for the club this time around after gaining automatic qualification and the whole squad should be in a much more fresher state this time around in comparison to the final months of last season.
