Some Liverpool fans on social media were left confused over why midfielder Adam Lallana had been called up for international duty by England.

Gareth Southgate’s squad for the upcoming friendlies against Spain and Switzerland was confirmed by England football team’s official Twitter account on Thursday.

While Lallana wasn’t the only Reds player included in the latest England squad, his inclusion was the one that some supporters of Jurgen Klopp’s side opted to focus on.

One Reds fan tweeted to ask what the 5ft 10in tall midfielder (Source: ESPN) had done to deserve an international call-up while another claimed that the player was destined to get injured.

OPINION

While one fan was quick to point out that they were confused yet happy for Lallana, this section of supporters reactions to the player getting international recognition speaks volumes. The 30-year-old midfielder has struggled to feature for the Reds in recent times due to injury and it seems odd that he is somehow deemed good enough to play for England based on this. Lallana has hardly had any time to prove his qualities to Jurgen Klopp let alone Southgate so it’s odd that he’s in the latest squad. However perhapsĀ the England manager simply wants a closer look at Lallana himself to see where his current fitness levels lie. The experienced midfielder has managed three minutes of Premier League action so far and while one fan in particular believes England duty will see him get injured, it might help the player. If Lallana can pick up some valuable playing time for his nation, it might allow him to return to the Reds after the international break raring to go.
