Spanish champions Barcelona are considering a surprise move for Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The newspaper claims that Ernesto Valverde’s side are interested in the £40,000-per-week [Source: Spotrac] left back as a back up option behind Jordi Alba.

Barcelona sold Lucas Digne to Everton this summer and have since been operating with just one senior left back in the squad, a situation that Valverde is keen to resolve.

Arsenal full back Nacho Monreal is another player Barca are considering, with a move for either man sending them back to Spain for the first time since they departed Sevilla and Malaga respectively.

OPINION

Both Monreal and Moreno are out of contract next summer [Source: Transfermarkt], meaning that Barcelona could secure either man on a pre contract deal in January, and have them join officially for free a few months later. Or they could simply try and get them in on the cheap once 2019 rolls around if they feel they can’t wait. Either way, it wouldn’t be the worse thing in the world for Liverpool. Moreno hasn’t been a disaster, but he hasn’t lived up to the expectations that many fans had for him when he arrived in 2014. He’s lost his place in the starting eleven to Andy Robertson over the last year or so, and doesn’t look like getting it back anytime soon. Of course, if he were to join the Spanish giants he wouldn’t be first choice either, so he would be swapping one back-up job for another. It would simply be a matter of whether he wanted a move back to Spain or not. It’s often said that you don’t say no to Barcelona, but in this case that wouldn’t be such a bad thing for Liverpool.
