“Still looking as though he’s been Liverpool’s right-back for years, England youngster [Alexander-Arnold] turned in a fine display against Southampton that included an assist,” he wrote in his column for the Mirror.

“What a leap! Matip caught the eye when he jumped above Southampton’s giant defender Jannik Vestergaard to score on what was his first start of the season for the Reds.”

OPINION

Collymore is right to heap praise on the Liverpool duo – they were magnificent against Southampton on Saturday. Matip may have been handed his first start of the season, but the star really made up for lost time when he soared above the Premier League’s tallest defender to net the Reds’ first goal. What a brilliant goal it was as well – and he certainly made a case for regular first team football after his performance in what will give Klopp a selection headache. As for Alexander-Arnold, is is coming into his own this season – and that was only reinforced at the weekend. His pinpoint delivery allowed Matip to head home, and Liverpool will certainly appreciate him a lot more if he continues to make contributions such as these. Like Collymore points out, he looks like he has been Liverpool’s right-back for a lot longer than he actually has – and Liverpool must exploit his talent to its maximum.
