Gary Lineker heaped praise on Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold after his performance in his side’s 3-2 win over Paris St Germain on Tuesday.

The Match of the Day host shared via his official Twitter account that he thought the Reds 19-year-old right-back was special and boldly tipped him to play 100 games for England in midfield.

As it stands Alexander-Arnold has only three England caps to his name and has only played one game in central midfield for the Reds, as he played for 65 minutes in that position against Stoke City in the 2017/18 season.

OPINION

Alexander-Arnold has tough competition when it comes to being England’s first-choice right-back as he has to compete with Manchester City’s Kyle Walker and Tottenham’s Kieran Trippier. However if he is able to move into midfield for his nation, like Lineker suggested, then he could soon rack up more caps. The 19-year-old full-back is able to regularly deliver inch-perfect crosses while wearing a Reds shirt and the idea of him delivering the goods for England while playing in midfield on the flank, is an interesting prospect. Alexander-Arnold may have disappointed in his appearance at the World Cup for England in the summer but it’s clear he will get better after learning from his experience. Also it’s easy to see why Lineker made the claim following watching Alexander-Arnold play against PSG on Tuesday as the teenager was simply fantastic against them. If he is able to continue performing like that then Gareth Southgate may no choice but to fit him into England team one way or another.
