Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has heaped praise on Marcus Rashford, saying the Manchester United striker can become a key player for England.

The 20-year-old opened the scoring for England in their 2-1 UEFA Nations League loss to Spain on Saturday, and Henderson expects him to continue that fine form in the future.

“We all know how talented Marcus is,” the Liverpool star said, as quoted by Sky Sports. “His was a great finish. He had another one or two chances that maybe he would have liked to have scored but I thought he looked sharp.

“He was lively and he’s always a threat on the counter-attack. He’s a fantastic young player so he just needs to keep learning, keep improving. He’s a big part of our team.”

Rashford has certainly become a key man for his country in recent years, and even more so now that Jamie Vardy has retired from international duty. The Leicester man had served as Harry Kane’s chief understudy for the last few years, and that role now falls to Rashford. However, as the United man showed on Saturday, he can also operate alongside the Tottenham talisman. He scored a great goal and clearly impressed Henderson, despite the number of chances the 20-year-old would miss as the game wore on. He’s a young player though so that’s going to happen. The Liverpool skipper, like most people, sees big things ahead for Rashford, and it’s indicative of England under Gareth Southgate that a Reds player can come out and praise a United star so openly. Perhaps that wouldn’t have happened amidst the club divides that fractured previous Three Lions squads. This is a new dawn for England, though, and Henderson clearly expects Rashford to play a big part in its future.
