Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has heaped praise on back up goalkeeper Simon Mignolet and in a bit of early teams news, has confirmed the Belgian will start against Chelsea on Wednesday.

The fringe player will earn his first appearance of the season and deputise for Alisson against the Blues in the Carabao Cup, and the Reds boss has praised the goalkeeper’s attitude this season.

“The only position I will confirm is Simon Mignolet will start,”  he said at a press conference on Tuesday, as reported by the Liverpool Echo’s Ian Doyle. “He has been brilliant. Yes, it was how you can imagine it.”

“Simon would have been ready to go to another club to be number one wherever in the world, but we couldn’t do it. Since then he has been brilliant. He deserves the game tomorrow.”

OPINION

Klopp is correct, Mignolet deserves to start against Chelsea. The Belgium international must be frustrated at his state of affairs on Merseyside, but by all accounts he has knuckled down and worked hard to be a valuable part of Klopp’s squad. The German clearly appreciates that and is very pleased with what he has seen from the ‘keeper. The Carabao Cup is the perfect opportunity to get Mignolet some game time, and he’s not such a bad player that starting him will cause the Reds to lose against Chelsea. Ultimately it doesn’t appear that Mignolet will be staying at Anfield beyond this season, but his positive attitude here will behoove him to the club’s supporters. It will also make him more likely to get a move to a good club come next summer. Either way, he deserves his opportunity on Wednesday – let’s hope he grabs it with both hands and has a solid game against Maurizio Sarri’s side.
