Derby County manager Frank Lampard has showered praise on Liverpool loanee Harry Wilson after his stunning free kick goal against Manchester United on Tuesday.

The Championship outfit completed a phenomenal victory over Jose Mourinho’s side in the Carabao Cup at Od Trafford, with Wilson scoring in the 2-2 draw before the Rams won 8-7 on penalties.

And Lampard was delighted with the Welshman’s performance: “He does it in training and funnily enough, when we got the free-kick, I turned around to the bench and said it was a bit too far out,” he told Sky Sports. “It certainly proved me wrong.

“He got the movement and it’s typical of him and Mason Mount. They practice, they’re hungry, they want to be great free-kick takers, and they want to be great Premier League players in the end. Both of those young lads are going to go a long way.”

OPINION

Wilson’s performance, coming as it did against United, will have delighted the Liverpool supporters. The young Welshman is really making a name for himself at Derby, and his time under Lampard is only going to improve him for when he eventually returns to Anfield. After watching the performances of Wilson and Mount against Mourinho’s men it’s hard to disagree with Lampard that they are both destined to become top Premier League players. They have the talent and it’s all about whether they get the opportunity to play regularly for their parent clubs in the future. But for now they are getting consistent first team minutes in a competitive division under a top, young manager. Wilson’s free kick was absolutely sensational and it showed the quality that the youngster has at his disposal. Liverpool supporters will now be eagerly looking forward to his return to Merseyside next summer and excited to see what he can do in a red shirt moving forward.
