Matt Le Tissier heaped praise on Liverpool defender Joe Gomez when choosing his best England XI ahead of the clash with Spain in the Nations League.

The Sky Sports pundit shared that the 21-year-old centre-back had all the right attributes to play in a back three and was the player pushing the most to break into the England’ first-team that impressed at the World Cup in Russia.

However despite being impressed by Gomez, Le Tissier opted not to name him in his team as he claimed it was hard to drop Kyle Walker, Harry Maguire and John Stones in favour of him.

“I think Joe Gomez has all the right attributes to play in a back three though and he’s the one pushing the most, but it would be pretty hard to drop any of the guys,” stated Le Tissier on Sky Sports’ website.

OPINION

The Reds’ young talent has started the season in impressive form and it’s not surprise that Le Tissier believes he is pushing to feature for England. Gomez has never started a competitive game for his nation but surely it’s only a matter of time before that changes. The centre-back has played every minute of the Reds’ Premier League campaign this season and has been a rock at the back. There were many who had doubts about Gomez starting for Jurgen Klopp’s side ahead of the side’s opening game against West Ham as it had been a while since he was deployed as a centre-back. However he has quickly ease any concerns by putting in well-timed challenges, putting his body on the line to block the ball and forming a fledgling partnership with Virgil van Dijk in his opening outings. While Le Tissier is willing to suggest breaking up England’s successful formula at the break to start Gomez against Spain on Thursday, the pundit does name Reds’ teammate Jordan Henderson in his ideal starting eleven.
