Alan Shearer has highlighted Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso as a major weakness to be exploited by Liverpool in their Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge next weekend.

The two teams are set to meet each other twice in a week as they clash in the Carabao Cup at Anfield on Wednesday before the Reds travel south to London for Saturday’s league clash.

Shearer has now singled out Spain international Alonso as the player who Liverpool must look to target going forward when they do meet in the Premier League, with the BBC pundit brushing past the Carabao Cup clash in which he believes vast changes will be made.

In a column for The Sun, he said: “Liverpool’s front three can take full advantage of the space Marcos Alonso leaves behind him if he bombs as far forward as he likes to.

“They will also be hoping he switches off again in the way he did to allow Andriy Yarmolenko a free header that should have won it [for West Ham on Sunday].”

OPINION

Shearer is right to highlight Alonso as a player who Liverpool can look to exploit next weekend, with the Spanish flyer constantly looking to get forward from the left-back position. With a player like Mo Salah on that flank, the Reds could easily find themselves in behind in a flash should Alonso be caught out at any point. However, what Jurgen Klopp’s side must also remember is that Alonso’s bombing runs forward offer a huge threat for Chelsea, and they must not allow him too much space to run free. The experienced wide man is becoming one of the most productive wing-backs in the country with his pinpoint crossing and underrated shooting, and he will no doubt be at it from the first whistle on Saturday. So, he is a player who they can exploit going forward, but they must be weary of him at the back, and that may involve Salah holding back slightly to nullify that threat.
