Many Liverpool supporters have been reacting with bemusement after it was announced that Mohamed Salah’s goal against Everton had won the 2018 Puskas Award on Monday night.
The Egypt international beat out the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale to the prize, in a decision that seemed to surprise many.

Some Liverpool supporters are obviously happy to see one of their players recognised, but many feel that the strike against Everton wasn’t even Salah’s best goal last season – let alone the best goal full stop.

Hahaha, that is a disgrace. Wasn’t even the best goal he scored at the Anfield Road End last season

OPINION
You can see where the Liverpool supporters are coming from here. The 5’7″ Salah [Source: Transfermarkt] scored many great goals last season. Of course, this strike against Everton was a masterpiece – and the fact it came against Liverpool’s great rivals made it even sweeter. However, there is no way that this strike was better than Gareth Bale’s stunning overhead kick in the Champions League final or Cristiano Ronaldo’s equally sumptuous effort against Juventus earlier in the competition. Sarah scored a great goal, but those two achieved out of this world brilliance. The award was decided by votes, though, so it was essentially a popularity contest. It’s good to see the Liverpool fans retain a measure of perspective, however. They know that Salah’s goal wasn’t the best and they are able to admit it. It doesn’t mean they don’t support him, merely that they have their heads screwed on right. How refreshing.
