OPINION

Van Dijk more than deserves to be crowned Standard Chartered’s first Player of the Month this season as he has cruised to stellar performances in the campaign. The centre-back has effectively been a rock at the back for his side and is a key reason why Jurgen Klopp’s men have racked up so many clean sheets in their opening games. While van Dijk clearly deserves another personal accolade for his shelf, reflected by the outpouring of love from supporters he received after he was announced the winner, it’s interesting that Mane and Salah were just behind in the voting for the award. As while both attackers have done tremendously well this season in their early outings, it’s hard to find a Reds player who has struggled, Joe Gomez should have been in the running. One supporter tweeted that Mane as well as Gomez should have been a close second to van Dijk for this award and it’s hard to disagree with them. Gomez has shone this season back in his natural position of centre-back and should have at least made the top three in the voting.
