Some Liverpool fans on Twitter reacted negatively to defender Dejan Lovren being available for selection one again after returning to full training following a pelvic injury.

The Reds’ official website confirmed on Wednesday that the centre-back was back in contention for Jurgen Klopp as he had re-joined his teammates for a workout at Melwood following his side’s 3-2 win over Paris St-Germain.

Lovren, who earns £65,000-a-week (Source: Spotrac), is yet to play a game for the Reds this season due to his recent injury concerns and it seems a section of supporters weren’t keen for that to change.

One Reds fan tweeted that they didn’t want the defender anywhere near the starting line-up due to how well Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk had played this season while another shared that they thought while it was nice to have more choice, Gomez must be played ahead of the Croatian international.

OPINION

What a difference a few games make. At the end of the 2017/18 campaign, Lovren put in several impressive displays for the Reds before looking like a competent and reliable defender for Croatia at the World Cup as they surprisingly went on to reach the tournament’s final. However despite his stellar form ahead of him sustaining an injury, Reds supporters aren’t keen to see him feature. It’s slightly harsh that some even refer to his return to full health as being good news for the reserve squad. As while Gomez has shone in Lovren’s absence, that doesn’t mean the experienced centre-back isn’t still valuable to the first-team. The Reds are set to be competing in several competitions this season and shouldn’t hold back from trying to rack up as many trophies as possible. Although for Klopp’s team to do that they will need to utilise their whole squad which means Lovren, even if Gomez and Van Dijk remain the first-choice centre-backs at Anfield for the time being, still has an important role to play.
