Many Southampton fans on social media slammed midfielder Mario Lemina after his display during the 3-0 defeat to Liverpool on Saturday.

The 6ft tall central midfielder (Source: Transfermarkt) played the full game for the Saints against the Reds but fans of Mark Hughes’ side were far from happy with his display.

One Saints supporter tweeted that some of their players had been a disgrace when facing Jurgen Klopp’s side as they had gone missing in the game before directly pointing their finger at Lemina.

While another fan revealed on Twitter that they thought the 25-year-old was a liability for his side as he just strolled around the pitch.

OPINION

From a Liverpool perspective, Lemina would have one of the Saints players that Klopp would have warned his players about. The midfielder has previously shone at the Saints and has looked like being a handful for his opponents. However during the Reds’ 3-0 win at Anfield over the Saints on Saturday, you would be excused if you forgot Lemina was playing. Based on his latest display it seems one Saints fan hits the nail on the head with his assessment of the midfielder by saying he either plays to a Champions League standard or to a level more often seen in non-league football. It’s interesting that several Saints supporters highlight the fact that as it was an away day, Lemina was destined to struggle and that perhaps means the player has a mentality issue stopping him from excelling. If the midfielder is able to deliver good performances at St Mary’s but not at any other stadium in the Premier League, then Hughes needs to address the issue.
