Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said that injury-hit midfielder Adam Lallana is in contention to play against Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

The England international, on a reported £65,000-per-week at Anfield [Source: Spotrac], has been sidelined with a groin injury suffered on Three Lions duty last month.

But Klopp has handed Reds fans a boost with his latest update: “Yes, of course,” he told the club’s official website when asked if the 30-year-old was in contention to face the Terriers.

“Now it’s getting a bit difficult with judging how fit he is really. But training looks tremendous; he obviously enjoys playing football. We will see what we do. Nobody, not even he, knows how long he can [play] and stuff like that. We still want to be careful – not too careful but, of course, careful [so] that we reach the point where we don’t have to think about it anymore.”

OPINION

This is a welcome boost to Liverpool at a time where there are so many injuries dogging the club. Lallana is such a talented player but he simply hasn’t been able to put together a consistent run of form on Merseyside due to his continued injury absences. Having him back against the Terriers gives Klopp another option he can turn to, a different type of player who is capable of unlocking even the stoutest of defences. Lallana is a unique footballer, someone who possesses the type of quick feet and intelligence that hasn’t always been associated with English players, and he can have a big impact this year as Klopp’s team attempts to challenge on multiple fronts. His versatility, too, will be important for his manager. He can operate in the front three or as part of the midfield trio, meaning Klopp can figure out what he wants to do depending on how the game is going. Either way, it’s fantastic news to have the former Southampton man back fit again.
