Liverpool sent a scout to watch the performances of Porto trio Alex Telles, Hector Herrera and Danilo against Galatasaray on Wednesday, according to the Plymouth Herald.

The newspaper claims that a Reds official was in attendance for Sergio Conceição’s side’s 1-0 win over the Turkish giants in the Champions League.

Liverpool are said to see defender Telles, who has a £40million release clause, as ideal competition for Andrew Robertson on the left hand side of Jurgen Klopp’s defence.

Midfielders Herrera and Danilo are also of interest to the Merseyside outfit, despite the club bringing in Fabinho and Naby Keita for big money this summer.

OPINION

This is an interesting one. Liverpool already have competition for Robertson in the form of Alberto Moreno, but Klopp obviously doesn’t think that the Spaniard is up to the task. In that case Telles would be an excellent addition, because he would really push the Scotland captain for a starting spot. The Herald’s report states that the Brazilian has a £40million release clause in his Porto contract, something that would present no problem for the cash-rich Reds. Herrera is out of contract at the end of the season so he’d represent a low-cost addition to the Liverpool midfield. Danilo, though, is probably not needed and you do wonder if Klopp isn’t in danger of overcrowding the middle of the park. The German already has plenty of central midfielders on the books, and adding Herrera and/or Danilo to that mix would surely stunt the growth of the likes of Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Perhaps those deals are best left alone, but Telles seems like a perfectly reasonable signing.
