Alan Shearer heaped praise on Liverpool defender Joe Gomez for his performance during the 1-0 win over Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

The BBC pundit shared that he thought the 21-year-old centre-back, who featured as a right-back against the Terriers, stood out during the game.

Shearer highlighted Gomez’s distribution of the ball, his pace and his cool as well as calm persona that helped submit another excellent performance for the Reds.

“I was very impressed with him today, wasn’t a great performance by Liverpool but this guy stood out again,” said Shearer on BBC One’s Match of the Day repeat (Sunday October 21, 9:22am).

“Cool, calm, pace to get across the pitch so quickly and wins the tackle.

“This is the goal and he starts it off, and as a forward you want the ball fizzed into you there, as it’s easier to control, the weight of pass from Shaqiri into Salah and then a beautiful finish.

“But look at that, pace on the ball like get hold of that and he did.

“And his distribution again was excellent and I thought everything about his performance was excellent at right-back, we know he can play at centre-half as well and he didn’t panic at all.

“He set Liverpool onto another attack and then when they were one-on-one in the box he did enough to get the block in, picks Salah out there with pace again and I thought he was excellent again today.”

OPINION

Gomez deserves all the praise in the world as he is continuing to shine brightly for Jurgen Klopp’s side. The defender has no problem delivering the goods for the Reds whether he is played as a centre-back or as a right-back. It’s actually hard to tell which position he is more suited to as he has excelled in both this season and hasn’t showed signs that being switched about effects him. It’ll be interesting to see if Gomez can maintain his fantastic form throughout the current campaign as he could be an underrated asset when it comes to aiding the Reds’ hopes of winning silverware anytime soon. This is because as Shearer pointed out, Gomez isn’t just looking strong defensively but he is looking capable of aiding his side’s attack. Gomez’s passing is as good as any of his more attacking teammates and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he racks up some assists as the season progresses.
