Former Liverpool defender Jim Beglin has raved about Joe Gomez’s performance for England v Spain on Twitter, predicting that he is set to become one of the best defenders in the Premier League.
The 6ft 2in enforcer [Transfermarkt] started for the Three Lions alongside Leicester star Harry Maguire at centre-back, with Gareth Southgate’s men coming away with a famous 3-2 win over Spain in Seville.
Former Reds star Beglin has now reacted to Gomez’s display, boldly claiming that should he continue his development at this pace then him and Virgil van Dijk will become the best centre-back partnership in the country.
If Joe Gomez continues playing to current standards, there won’t be a better central defensive @premierleague pairing than he and Virgil van Dijk.

OPINION
This is some big praise from former Liverpool favourite Beglin, and words that are hard to disagree with. Gomez was in imperious form against a dangerous Spanish attack and looked at home on the international stage after missing out on the World Cup through injury. It is clear that Southgate really rates the 21-year-old, who would most definitely have played a big part for the Three Lions in Russia had he been fit. Gomez repaid Southgate’s faith on Monday with a brilliant display which showcased his game perfectly, and this performance will give massive heart to everyone involved with Liverpool. Gomez’s displays for the club this season have been just as good, and it is nice to see him get the recognition he deserves outside of the club’s fanbase. In terms of Beglin’s big prediction, that may well come true very soon, especially if Toby Alderweireld ends up leaving Tottenham, with him and Jan Vertonghen their likely rivals for the best partnership in the league.
