There is no other player who has been raved about more this season than Liverpool centre-back Virgil Van Dijk.
That does not come as much of a surprise really – he has clearly been one of the Reds’ standout players this campaign due to his sublime and consistent performances.
Liverpool’s defensive fragilities in defence have been put to bed since he arrived from Southampton last January – basically, there is no denying the talent that the Dutch ace has.
However, despite all the praise he has been receiving, there is one pundit who does not think he has reached the top just yet.
That pundit is Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher.
“He’s right in the top group. Some people may put him top, I would just hang fire with that, with the fact that he hasn’t won the biggest trophies yet. I think you have to do that,” he told Sky Sports.
“I think if you want to be known as the best in whatever position, you have to have something on the CV, you know Premier League or Champions League.”
Carragher has recently been full of praise for the Liverpool giant, but he has certainly hit the nail on the head with this verdict.
He is right – even though he is a fantastic player in his position, it is definitely far too soon to say that he is one of the “top” defenders at the moment.
Van Dijk needs to start winning honours with Liverpool if he wants to be considered the best of the best – and this season, he could do just that.
The Reds’ ace is certainly one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League – it is no secret that many of the top-flight’s attacking talent fear coming up against him due to the strength and presence he holds on the pitch.
There may be a wave of Liverpool fans who would not be the best pleased about this opinion on Van Dijk – but it is hard not to agree with Carragher on this one.
