Sky Sports pundit Tony Cascarino has compared Liverpool defender Joe Gomez to England legend Bobby Moore based on one thing alone – his “mentality”.

He labelled the 6ft 2in [Transfermarkt] enforcer as “world class”, whilst also comparing him to France’s Raphaël Varane, who is considered as one of the best defenders there is at the moment.

Cascarino also claims that Gomez – who provided the throw-in on Sunday that led to England’s equaliser against Croatia – has all the attributes needed to be England’s number one centre-back over the next decade.

“Mark my words, Joe Gomez is destined to be England’s first-choice centre half for the next ten years. When the national manager comes to pick his defence, the Liverpool man will be the first name down,” he said in his column for the Times.

“For me he is up there with Raphaël Varane, of France, as world class. Gomez has everything you need in a centre half and more — pace, strength, heading ability, composure and a long throw, too, to provide set-piece chances.

“He has a mentality that reminds me of Bobby Moore, in that he does the simple things so well.”

OPINION

Another day, another pundit hailing the greatness of Liverpool defender Joe Gomez. Who can blame him? At the age of 21-years-old, Gomez has put himself firmly in the running for a regular spot in the team for both club and country, which is not all that surprising. Even though Jurgen Klopp has played him a few times at full-back this season, based on this England display, it is clear to see that he thrives the most operating at centre-back. Fingers crossed that Klopp recognises this too, as his talent is just wasted when he is shifted along the back line. Cascarino is right though – he does have all the attributes of an excellent centre-half, and at such a young age too.  The fact that he has also been compared to the likes of Varane show just how much he has developed of the course of the season so far – and he is only going to get better.
