Former England international Martin Keown has showered praise on Liverpool defender Joe Gomez for his performance for the Three Lions against Croatia on Sunday.

The 21-year-old was superb in Gareth Southgate’s side’s 2-1 victory, providing class and composure at the back alongside fellow centre half John Stones.

Keown was clearly impressed with the Reds star: “Everything he does is so graceful that it almost looks set to music,” he wrote in the Mail.

“Stepped in with the ball well and brilliant long throw for equaliser,” he finished, as he awarded Gomez a 7.5 rating out of 10.

OPINION

Keown is absolutely spot on, here. Gomez is looking more composed by the game, both for club and country, and he’s clearly an integral figure for Southgate alongside Stones at the back. He is a solid and dependable defender, but he’s also incredibly talented on the ball. He can bring the ball out from the back and he’s not afraid to put his passing ability on the line and bring the ball from the defence into midfield. His long throw in for the equaliser was also pivotal. He absolutely rocketed the ball into the box and it caused havoc amongst the Croatian defence. There’s no doubt that he is one of England’s leading lights and you’d expect him to go on and get a bucketload of caps for his country in the coming years. The frightening thing with Gomez is that he’s still just 21 years of age – he’s only going to get better as time goes on, it’s quite staggering.
