Liverpool are ready to go head to head with Premier League rivals Arsenal for the signature of Belgian youngster Cyril Ngonge, according to the Mirror.
The newspaper claims that the 18-year-old Club Brugge attacker has attracted the interest of the English duo through his performances in the UEFA Champions Youth League this season.
He’s netted four goals in four games in the competition this term, and is considered to be one of the stars of Belgium’s next generation.
The two teams have been tracking Ngonge’s progress and are looking to get him soon rather than when he has broken through into the first team and will consequently cost more money.
Belgium has been a hotbed of top class talent for many years now and so there’s no surprise that England’s top teams are looking over there for the next generation of players. It’s always a good idea to supplement your first team squad with exciting youngsters, as it ensures thee’s a succession plan in place. That, it seems, is what Liverpool are attempting to do here. Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane still have many years ahead of them but it is prudent to look at who will take over in the Reds frontline once their time with the club is up. It sounds as if Ngonge is one of the players the club are considering as they look to secure the future of their attack. Four goals in four games in the youth Champions League for a side like Brugge is nothing to sneer at, and suggests that the 18-year-old has masses of potential. Arsenal will provide fierce competition, but there’s no reason why the Reds can’t win the race for the youngster.
