Steve McMahon has urged Liverpool to pursue Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey with the player reportedly being available for a free transfer in the summer.

Sky Sports reported that as they understood it the 27-year-old central midfielder would leave the Gunners at the end of the season when his contract expired as he was told a new deal wouldn’t be offered.

McMahon made a case for why the Reds’ should make a move for Ramsey on Sky Sports’ The Debate before laying out his argument on the broadcaster’s website.

When listing the reasons why he thought Jurgen Klopp should snap up the Premier League star, the Sky pundit claimed Ramsey was better than current Reds midfielder Adam Lallana when suggesting where he would fit in their side.

“It all depends who’s starting. They have been switching it around between Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita so either of those. Fabinho is not the right person for me, I think he’s like-for-like with Henderson,” wrote McMahon on Sky Sports.

“There’s something to be said that Ramsey is better than Adam Lallana and Xherdan Shaqiri knew when he went to Liverpool that he would be a squad player.

“I think Ramsey would fight for his place. It wouldn’t be a chance, and I would be interested in Ramsey.”

OPINION

This seems harsh on Lallana though Ramsey doesn’t seem like the better option if the Reds had the luxury of choosing between them. Lallana has really struggled with injuries in recent times and can’t be relied upon to deliver the goods for Klopp’s side. The 30-year-old, who earns £110,000-a-week at Anfield (Source: BBC), has previously shone for the Reds but if Ramsey is able to be snapped up for free than it’s easy to see that the English midfielder should be fretting about his future. Ramsey has been an important player for the Gunners in recent seasons and has plenty of Premier League experience. The 27-year-old has played 244 times in England’s top-flight and has scored 37 goals as well as registered 48 assists, which isn’t too shabby by any means. Also given that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain joined the Reds from the Gunners in the summer of 2017 and improved upon arriving, then maybe Ramsey can raise his game under Klopp too.
