Molby raves about Shaqiri

|

Liverpool legend Jan Molby has highlighted the impact of summer signing Xherdan Shaqiri at Anfield, claiming the versatile forward brings ‘an awful lot of quality.’

The Switzerland international arrived on a £13.5million deal from Stoke City in the summer and there were questions about his work ethic after several years in the Midlands.

Molby however believes that Shaqiri has realised this is his big shot, and raved about the form of the 27-year-old, who scored for the Reds against Fulham last time out.

In a column for the Liverpool Echo, Molby said: “Xherdan Shaqiri of course was the other goalscorer and the Liverpool fans have now got a pretty good feel as to what he is about.

“That involves an awful lot of quality. That was demonstrated with his goal which wasn’t an easy volley but he controlled it very well.

“There were doubts about Shaqiri when he came in and some asked the question as to whether he’d get the team ethic for working hard but he’s fitted in perfectly and I think he realises this is his last chance at a big club.”

OPINION

Molby has obviously been very impressed with Shaqiri this season so far, and it is easy to see why. His stint at Stoke did not really illustrate his full potential, with Shaqiri’s work-rate and heart coming into question during his time at the Bet365 Stadium. Some of his former teammates had been pretty vocal about his perceived laziness, but Shaqiri seems to have put those doubts to bed in his first few months at Anfield. He has obviously found some extra motivation in completing his move to work under Jurgen Klopp on Merseyside, and Liverpool are reaping the rewards. Shaqiri’s form at the moment puts him well in the frame to start above some of his more established teammates, who are struggling to replicate their run from last season. His goal against Fulham was so well-taken, as highlighted by Molby, and hopefully there are many more of those to come for the 27-year-old.
