Michael Owen shared he couldn’t believe the referee needed his assistant to tell him that Liverpool deserved a penalty during their clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

The Reds loss 2-1 to PSG in the Champions League on Wednesday with their goal coming courtesy of James Milner scoring from the penalty spot.

Sadio Madio was brought down just inside the box by Angel Di Maria to win the penalty but at first it seemed the referee signalled for a corner kick.

Owen shared via his personal Twitter account that he couldn’t believe the referee needed help noticing the foul and also question the official not sending off Marco Verratti for a challenge on Joe Gomez.

“Verratti surely had to be a red? And can’t believe the Ref needed his assistant to tell him it was a penalty,” tweeted Owen.

OPINION

Owen has a point with his disbelief over the referee being unsure about awarding penalty, as by all accounts it looked like a clear foul in the box on Mane. It would have been a case of injustice if the referee had gone on to just award a corner and Reds supporters should be thankful that his assistant was alert to the incident. As for the Verratti incident, the PSG midfielder should be feeling lucky that he only received a yellow card for his tackle on Gomez as it certainly looked a nasty one by all accounts. On another day with another referee, Verratti could have received his marching orders. However regardless of that incident the Reds didn’t exactly fire on all cylinders against PSG and they only have themselves to blame for slipping to a 2-1 defeat. Hopefully Jurgen Klopp’s side are able to get the result they need to progress through the Champions League group stages against Napoli as it will be a shame if they crashed out so early in the tournament.
