A section of international fans have been blown away by the display of Liverpool midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri for Switzerland on Sunday.

The Swiss stunned Belgium 5-2 in this UEFA Nations League showdown after Thorgan Hazard put the visitors ahead, but Switzerland fought back with a hat trick from Haris Seferovic and goals from Ricardo Rodriguez and Nico Elvedi.

Even though Shaqiri did not get on the scoresheet, many supporters were quick to rave about his exploits, with some comments including “best player on the planet”, “undroppable” and “absolutely outstanding”.

COMMENTARY

What a comeback from Switzerland – especially against a team who finished third in the World Cup this year. Belgium were outstanding in the summer, so they were bound to have been favourites for this clash, and the Swiss basically looked dead and buried after Hazard put them 2-0 up after 17 minutes. Fighting back from two goals down to equalise is hard enough as it is, but the hosts went one step further and completely obliterated Belgium in the second half. This bodes well for Switzerland for the rest of the competition, and this win will give them the confidence to go on and secure victories against the top countries. Shaqiri may not have scored but he was definitely instrumental in this win. He has not been raved about by the fans like this for a long time – but he thoroughly deserves it. Like one supporter said, the ace is the “bargain of the season”, and it is pretty hard not to agree with them.
